Why is it that when you fall for something at first sight, there’s always a catch? For that, you’d have to climb Mount Wisdom – or the northern mountain range of Hokkaido in Japan, which is not just around the corner. Up there, a client of LEAD Architects has chosen an impressive location to set up a design living tent, slash open-air cinema. A private panoramic wellness living room in the middle of nature, in short: the YEZO Retreat. This is a one room retreat, everything looks like a glass parked under a giant twisted Asian straw hat and poured a mix of design and coziness underneath.
The elegant and fluid space of the YEZO Retreat project follows a very minimalist, yet expressive, performance-oriented approach to materials and construction. The wooden roof shell structure is made of glued wood beams (GluLam) suspended from a central concrete chimney and clad in black slate from the region.A soundtrack of wood, stone, water and light that creates new impressions each time with the changing weather beats. Everything is there for living pleasure: large bed, an elegant, cozy fireplace, plus an outdoor pool with an unobstructed view of the hills: yes, you can stand it there. A nice whisky or a glass of wine, and just say ciao to the thoughts, the stress has to wait in the valley. Also slightly smitten? No wonder. Will the owner of the YEZO Retreat ever become a host and offer lovers a spontaneous date with the still private open-air cinema? One can only hope – but I would understand it if he remains faithful to his hideaway relationship.
