Vacations in the concrete bunker or in the 10 soccer fields large animation club can be made also. It is just less charming and relaxing. Spending days off (no matter whether it’s sunny or rainy) can be fun, be remembered for a long time, make the people you tell about your destination speechless, and: be affordable! You always have to save a bit, I already know. In part 1 of the series, I already introduced you to unusual vacation homes that you don’t want to move out of. Now I’ve put together a second part of my Bucket List – with insider tips that have a lot of character and inner values. Have fun being inspired and happy wanderlust!
Unusual vacation homes, part 2:
Ilmatar Airplane Lodge, Finnland
Vacation at the airport? Doesn’t sound very sexy at first – but if it’s your own and you don’t have to pay for expensive kerosene, then it sounds like a precision landing, doesn’t it? I had airplanes in my stomach when I discovered this vacation home. The jet in the Ilmatar Airplane Lodge no longer has a permit to fly, but you can check in and enjoy a down-to-earth vacation there – including your own hangar with a fancy interior and whirlpool. This unusual vacation apartment was built around a decommissioned 35-seater SAAB340b passenger plane. The passenger plane has been transformed into a high-quality accommodation and lounge area where our guests can experience a touch of luxury.
The shape of the aircraft is clearly recognizable in the Interiror – simply first class.
The hangar even has a sauna on board.
Landing permission is not only granted in the cozy Jacuzzi.
From the cockpit, there is a captain’s suite where guests can admire the night sky. The interior of the aircraft is equipped with a sofa bed, a lounge area and an aircraft sauna. Next to the aircraft is the villa building, also known as the control tower, which serves as additional accommodation and lounge area. The villa has two separate bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, a living area, sanitary facilities and a sauna with a traditional wood-burning stove – and of course the outdoor hot tub. In total, up to eight people would be able to board in this unique accommodation.
Unusual vacation homes such as the lmatar Airplane Lodge are particularly inviting to check in.
Now if that’s not a location to fly away to? Well, if Rudolf the Reindeer and flying sleighs are on vacation, you’ll have to fly to Finland to get the unique accommodation – but the prospect of a jacuzzi wine date there has my wanderlust turbines spinning.

Cablewayroom, Italien
A truly unusual vacation home: the Cablewayroom near Bergamo in Italy.
But there is the highest cable car at the pool summit!
I have a soft spot for unusual vacation accommodation, and this recent discovery has immediately awakened my wanderlust and my desire for a poolside wine date with a fabulous view. Because here the hosts have interpreted the theme of retirement in a different way. Gondolas always have a good view on their normal route – in the Cablewayroom (from 320 euros) you can enjoy this privilege on vacation while the cabin stands still and relaxes. The location: on the plateau of Selvino-Aviatico, near Bergamo in Italy. As it would be a bit cramped in a gondola like this on its own, a cozy extension was bolted onto the roof, a charming terrace was pulled ashore and a flirty pool was placed in front of the gondola’s front door. Phew – what a great place for a crispy wine date!

Woolbrook Reservoir, UK
In my personal wanderlust thoughts, I’ve often been ready for the island, but never in England, or better yet, England. Let’s change that with this bucket list vacation home in a suburb of Devonshire that just popped up on my travel wish list. At first I thought it was a footballers’ villa – but luckily you can rent it for private vacations. And, fittingly, there’s room for a whole soccer team. Which also helps with the budget – if you divide it by 11, everyone can play along financially on vacation.
A total of 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a light-flooded atrium, games room and fitness room await discovery. And all packed into a really fancy design – the time-out tactic works, doesn’t it? The architecture embedded in the natural surroundings is truly unique and, despite its down-to-earth design, is an eye-catcher ready for take-off – the leisure penalty kick must be in there.
Lots of glass and plenty of space – even in the bedrooms.
Cozy: The outdoor lounge area with bar, fire pit and hot tub.
My highlight: the large garden. A dream team consisting of an outdoor barbecue with pizza oven, fire pit, lounge area, bar and cozy jacuzzi or hot tub. Here, it’s not the round that has to go into the square, but me into the round. I could transport myself there directly with an all-star world selection of wines and dribble through a time-out according to all the rules of vacation home vacation art.

Lemon Retreat, Portugal
New wanderlust soundtrack. When I clicked through the pictures and stumbled across this charming getaway in Portugal, I immediately had Pony by Ginuwine in my head. If you swipe to the end, you’ll understand why. The signals sent out by the lemon retreat in Valpedre, east of Porto, are as flirty as the undertone of the song. The small, unique vacation home is part of the Oporto Lemon Farm, which also offers the Lemon Villa and the Lemon House. In the middle of a lemon grove, you check into a wooden and glass bungalow with its own pool, a double bed, kitchen, bathroom and small room. Total area: 25 m². Simply charming, isn’t it?
Rarely has the location in what felt like nowhere been as sexy as at the lemon retreat in Portugal.
The interior is classy, modern, and with a view like this you have to make yourself comfortable, right?
Pool and wine date in the middle of a lemon field: the Lemon Retreat lives up to its name.
What was that: When life gives you lemons, turn them into dream vacations with wine dates at a lemon retreat? That’s how I would interpret it – and how sexy would it be to go from one Portugal wine flirt to the next while cooling off in the pool? The fact that a pony from the associated farm might even drop by makes the soundtrack almost sweet again, doesn’t it?

Villa Filanda, Lake Como, Italy
Actually, the goal of this blog is to present affordable insider tips for home bar and travel. But I like to dream about beautiful pools, and that’s why money doesn’t play a role in today’s tip for #journeythursday. The refreshing pool right on Lake Como in Italy is playing its own film version of Shades of Blue, and I’d love to be captivated by Italian white wines there. The pool is part of Villa Filanda, a very charmingly restored 17th-century silk spinning mill. Stone cladding, high vaulted ceilings and an antique chimney alternate with classy interiors in an industrial look.
High ceilings, large windows with a view of the lake, cozy furniture: Villa Filanda is the perfect place to spend your vacation.
The style: industrial chic.
The villa is located on foot on the lake in the old town of Brienno, a small village 17 km north of Como and 7 km from the highway. Filanda accommodation can accommodate 8 adults plus 2 children in 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms on request. The villa (400 sqm) has 4 air-conditioned bedrooms and 4 bathrooms and access to the lake with private promenade.
Super charming: the garden directly on the lake, with artfully designed staircase and seating for a glass of wine with lake view.
The former spinning mill factory was renovated with great sensitivity and transformed into a vacation oasis, including a dream pool directly on the lake.
If the 8 guests find room to share the 2500 euros daily rent, it is even almost affordable. But always in view: the lake. In addition, a nice garden oasis, in which you can plate up regional delicacies, and dream with a glass of wine and a view of the water. Oh wait, we’re already dreaming anyway.
Villa Filanda, price: at around 2500 euros / night, for example via airbnb.de
Haus Eremo, Molina dei Giusi, Italien
In Mallorca they would now say: Lecko mio, I just say ciao bella, new wanderlust amore! There is again a new candidate from the series unusual vacation homes for vacation. And this architectural pool flirt called Tenuta Molino dei Giusi in Italy, more precisely Liguria, was direct infatuation. The family project consists of three accommodations, and I would beam straight to the Eremo house. A little nest for two on the top of a hill with an unobstructed view of the sea.
Old meets new: The mix of stone and concrete at Molina dei Giusi is magical with the play of light, even at night.
The whole is a charming mix of historical, renovated building with modern annex. All divided into two areas: Living area with kitchen and sofa plus sleeping area overlooking the Gulf of Imperia, where even morning grouches are likely to get up motivated. And how indulgent to the eye this square, practical, good deep blue bathing spot simply is. I just see myself speed dating by the fancy pool with a selection of regional wines. Cool down below, cool down above – if the vacation enjoyment doesn’t run smoothly, I don’t know what will.
Has the hang of it: The kitchen design is also inviting and exudes an open vibe.

Sogndal Fjord Panorama, Norway
Those who know me know that it doesn’t take much at all for travel flirts to make you fall in love with a location. Rather small than large, an exciting location, charming design – and pool or Jacuzzi, then it already crackles. If, as in the case of these uniquely designed vacation homes in Norway, the view of the swimming pool is added to the mix, the butterflies in your stomach will have rockets strapped to them.
Outdoor vacation adventure in a cozy vibe: The Atmosphere cabin flirts with its own Jacuzzi with fjord views.
Large windows create nature cinema vibes, the interior is classy modern.
Wouldn’t you like to go swimming right away with the movie-like scenery?
The cottages of Sogndal Fjord Panorama give the feeling of living in the middle of the wild Naur – but with the comfort you would expect from a hotel. And then this nature cinema view – which you can enjoy dignified from the large windows of the cottages. There are six cottages to choose from, including two that offer space for a whole family at once. The accommodations are located just ten minutes from Sogndal, which offers a wide range of restaurants and culture. This is a destination for hikers who enjoy hiking.
In the cottage “The View” you can watch the evening sky directly through the skylight. A sheltered courtyard with its own hot tub creates space for comfort and tranquility.
More hotel than cottage: the bathroom area.
Keyword big cinema: Yes, there is a projector in the bedroom.
My immediate bucket list favorite: the 20-square-meter cabin “The Atmosphere”. In the bedroom you’ll find a double bed plus a projector for movie nights, a fully equipped kitchen, and outside a private whirlpool with a fantastic view over the Pfarrfjord. To uncork a nice wine for the bubble party must be the final highlight. I’ll dream on then.

Villa Secret Horizon, Turkey
Imagine you dream of beach enjoyment on vacation in Turkey, but you have to either towel toss before breakfast, possibly accept expensive extra costs for sunbed rentals, or just rather start from the back seats in the direction of the sea. Does joy arise there? The beautiful: It does not always have to be the all-inclusive palace, where you can get lost on top – you can also discover the country with a little more privacy – own beach included. And even far away from the sea. How is that supposed to work? Well, for it one must rent oneself over the well-known portals in this unusual vacation house.
As made for vacation highlights: Villa Secret Horizon in Turkey.
Inside, plenty of light, open spaces and modern interiors await.
Villa Secret Horizon looks like a design greenhouse – but only relaxation is grown.
It’s called Villa Secret Horizon, has 2 bedrooms with room for four guests, a flat-screen TV, fully equipped kitchen, refrigerator, washing machine and an oven, and is located on the Turkish Aegean Sea. More precisely, in Ortaca, a municipality in the homonymous Ilçe of Muğla province, about 31 km from Dalaman airport.
The highlight: the hotel’s own beach area, which exudes a touch of tropical island feeling. It makes you want to dive right in, say ciao to everyday life and enjoy your time. With pleasure also with a nice Turkish wine – there I would beam me directly there.

Villa Belmont, Bavaria, Germany
I love contrasts, and that’s why this unusual vacation home in Bavaria is on this list. Even though it’s not exactly entry-level friendly in terms of price – but at second glance, when you share it with friends, it moves from a dream back into the realm of the near.
The cool location, which mixes a historic villa in the forest with a newly built spa annex, goes by the simple name of Villa Belmont.
Built in 1915, the listed villa, whose loving restoration and modernization was completed in 2023, presents itself charmingly arrived in the here and now. On the first steps inside the villa, hand-picked Solingen marble tiles emphasize the elegant character of the house. The first floor is the heart of the villa – with cooking, living and dining areas complete with a fully equipped kitchen, a free-standing kitchen unit, a heavy wooden table and a lounge with an inset fireplace. My wine quirk would also be catered for: a wine room behind a black steel glass door is available for enjoying a fine drop. That’s what I’m talking about!
No mirage: the pool oasis in the Alps is real!
First the pool flirt, then a glass of wine on the terrace? Or why not both at the same time!
Upstairs, modern bedrooms with views of the forest and mountains await. Each room is furnished with high quality furniture from local manufacture. Furthermore, the floor has a bathroom with shower and freestanding bathtub.
The interior of Villa Belmont in Garmisch-Partenkirchen: cozy-classy.
In the attic there is a lounge area with rocking chair in front of free-floating fireplace, wine fridge, chaise longue and separate bathroom and toilet. Mountain view included, logo.
But that’s not all, of course. Let’s get to the highlights underground. The basement features a private spa with a 12m swimming pool, a salt grotto with infrared heat, a custom-made walnut sauna, a shower landscape and an area that can be opened by large sliding windows. Doesn’t that sound inviting? You can check into Villa Belmont from around 2000 euros per day – but divided by the 16 possible people it can accommodate, that’s almost a bargain, isn’t it?

The Hampton, Sweden
Too pool to be true. Okay, the text entry was almost obvious, but what was built there as a vacation home experience on a Swedish cliff in Saltsjö Boo near Stockholm can also be entered in the dictionary behind terms like “wow” or “Swedish curtains deluxe”.
Right away: This vacation accommodation does not correspond to the credo of affordability that I would like to present on the blog, but if a week’s vacation there costs as much as a mid-range car, we are talking about dreaming, and dreaming must also be allowed sometimes.
Simply magical: the location of the vacation home high up on the cliff, with direct access to the sea.
The interior – here in the living area with fireplace – is very elegant and classy – as you would expect in Scandinavia.
Cinematic: the view of the bay from the infinity pool.
Featuring a garden, The Hampton christened villa awaits guests in Gustavsvik in the Stockholm County Region. Stockholm is 13 km from the villa and you can reach Sandhamn after 36 km. You are separated from the nearest Stockholm-Bromma Airport by 20 km. The unusual vacation home includes 5 separate bedrooms plus 3 bathrooms, up to 12 people can sleep at the Hampton. The on-site staff will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner (not included in the price) at the desired time upon request. After all, you don’t treat yourself to anything else.
The luxurious villa is flooded with light and offers a fantastic panoramic view over the Stockholm archipelago. So after a dip in the pool, you could enjoy a wine or two at sunset, watching the boats sail through Höggarns Bay. The architecture on the cliffs is as picturesque as it is whacky, the builder really had a flair for good location, or a perfect location. With so much enthusiasm, one suspects that the price will also swing to new heights. For seven days, you should plan a budget of around 35,000 euros. But divided by 12, that’s almost a bargain, isn’t it?

Maison du Mûrier, France
You think MLB hitters have the perfect swing? Maybe, but: This picture-perfect vacation home impression with this beautiful swing can be experienced in real life – and therefore landed very freshly on my personal bucket list. The unusual vacation home is located in a rural hamlet in the southwestern tip of the Hautes-Alpes department in southern France.
La Maison du Mûrier is a truly unique vacation home – an old stone farmhouse with modern architectural elements, furnished with design classics and collectibles by Jean Prouvé, Charles & Ray Eames, Hans Wegner and contemporary pieces by designers such as Jasper Morrisson, Terence Woodgate, Tom Dixon, Wouter Scheublin, Martino Gamper. The house consists of the villa on the upper first floor and a separate open studio with its own kitchen, bathroom and outdoor area. There is another separate area on the first floor where the hosts stay to make sure everything is running smoothly and to be there for guests if they have questions or need help. They are on site, according to the website, but discreet and respectful of privacy. It’s a trade-off you can make for such a uniquely decorated location.
Just very poolish: the La Maison du Mûrier.
The interior is open, clean and elegant.
Architecture and design play a major role at La Maison du Mûrier.
The cuisine of La Maison du Mûrier is also rated tasteful.
Given the location, you’re more likely to have a date with tractors than fancy sports cars, but it’s precisely for this carefree tranquility that you look for accommodation that offers everything you need as a curious bon vivant and pool dater. The brains behind the project are a photographer Jason and stylist Keiko. It took them over 12 years to restore La Maison du Mûrier. I think the effort was more than worth it, don’t you? Thanks to five bedrooms, there’s room for all guests, and the living area has a cheeky modern design. The kitchen has all the amenities you need for a cooking party with friends.
In addition, the unusual cottage has a cellar bar with an original stone vault from the 17th century. The Honest Bar on trust is stocked with various spirits and syrups made with local herbs, fruits and berries. There’s also a Magimix ice cream maker, if you’re in the mood to make homemade ice cream with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Stuff there is. But there’s more to whet your appetite here: the outdoor dining and cooking area has a wood-burning oven for homemade pizzas and a charcoal grill for a barbecue. The region averages 300 days of sunshine a year, so nothing stands in the way of a barbecue.
Multi-talented: the concrete Jacuzzi is first wine cooler, and after heating wellness DJ.
The heated pool really heats up the bathing mood.
My highlight? Of course, the swimming world. The terrace villa has a 10 m x 4 m swimming pool. It is heated to a pleasant 27 degrees in the summer months and to about 24 degrees in the winter. The customized concrete whirlpool, which can comfortably accommodate 4 or 6 people, is filled with fresh water every time you book. Practical: You can chill wine in there beforehand, and then heat it up for yourself afterwards. Classy!

Casa da Volta, Portugal
Six-pack and vacation – that goes together without much effort, beer or the corresponding abs – if you check in like here at Casa de Volta. This exclusive vacation location is the latest flirt on my bucket list, located in the heart of the Comporta – Grândola – Melides triangle, about 1.5 hours from Lisbon and has six tastefully designed suites on offer, distributed around an inner courtyard. Plus, of course, plenty of privacy. Five rooms accommodate up to 2 guests each and are in the main house, while the sixth room sits lonely at the main entrance to the house, perhaps reserved for those seeking peace and quiet. In uniquem ambience.
With this relaxed interior, you want to lie down in Casa da Volta and dream. And then off to the pool.
From the clean living room you have the jewel of this unusual vacation home, the pool, perfectly in view.
Appetizing architecture meets appetizing tabletop at Casa da Volta.
Casa da Volta is an architectural interpretation of country living, designed in collaboration with the renowned Lisbon firm Promotório Architects and the newly formed Silva Cravo Architects. Together, they have woven modern minimalism and a distinct contemporary feel with nostalgic timelessness. Guests are also provided with personalized tips and individually organized experiences to help them explore the country’s culture – in the form of activities, outdoor experiences, cultural as well as by the glass or plate. By the way, the Casa da Volta is always booked exclusively in full – no matter how many rooms are occupied in the end.
The Casa da Volta (literally: “House of Return”) is located on a 20-hectare hilly site – in which the builders have also found the perfect place for an architecturally very flirtatious design pool. Just the thought of having a date at the pool with Portuguese wines, and diving first into the country’s cuisine, and then the blue cooling off, makes the wanderlust thermometer escalate again.

Nature Villa Käbi, Maidla Resort, Estonia
And again a location that is freshly hopped on my bucket list. You know how it is to sit down on the 4 letters – but here I wouldn’t bring the backside into play, but take a seat in the Käbi. That’s the name of one of the charming design vacation homes at Maidla Resort, about 45 minutes from Estonia’s capital Tallinn. I immediately fell in love with this accommodation. Those who know me a bit know: Jacuzzi with nature cinema view and a nice wine to go with it – wanderlust infatuation is awakened. The source of inspiration for the Nature Villa KÄBI came directly from nature. The striking appearance, which resembles that of a pine cone, was achieved by using wooden shingles. Inside you’ll find everything you need: king size bed, fireplace, shower and the outdoor hot tub. So I could happily beam myself to the Estonian Jacuuzi with a glass of red wine right now – think Santa would feel right at home there, too.
Contrasts deluxe. Wouldn’t you like to jump right in?
Nature Villa Käbi is an architectural island of tranquility.
So I’m on fire for the interior and the view.
Cozy nature cinema: the rooms in the Nature Villa Käbi.
Nature Villa – there are also Villa Poku and Villa Kasebe – is located next to the historic Maidla manor complex, which is about 5 centuries old. There is a lot to discover for those interested in Estonian history and manor culture as well as architecture and nature. But very tasteful or? Cue culinary: for dinner, the hosts have created two options – an exclusive 5-course experience dinner in the Old Servants’ House by Chef Daanius Aas 3 days a week (Thu-Sat) or a leisurely takeaway dinner in the Nature Villa.

Airship Villa, Bali
Because nothing beats the view of unusual vacation apartments, it can only get better if these unusual vacation accommodations come up with an attractive view at the same time. This location in Bali meets that criterion with flying colors – and all wrapped up in a fancy design dress code. The vacation villa in Kecamatan Kuta Selatan, more precisely in Pecatu, christened “Airship” on Airbnb, has the look of a small modern mini airship – landed or better luxuriously stranded in the natural jungle.
Airship on the ground: Who wouldn’t want to board here?
Thanks to the glass dome architecture, this unusual vacation apartment offers unique views and insights.
If that’s not a pool flirting wanderlust perspective!
Amenities at the uniquely vacation location include a fully air-conditioned living room with 75″ smart TV, sauna and Jacuzzi, telescope and, of course, private pool with ocean views.
Thanks to the architecturally smart glass dome concept, you always have the surrounding nature in view when you switch off. This also applies to the attractive outdoor area. From your little holiday spaceship, you simply descend a few steps to the fancy pool flirt. Also on board: seating area, fireplace and sun loungers.
With so much extraordinary charm, design and the bucket list pool, wanderlust arises here in any case. You just have to travel halfway around the world.

Hidden Pool-Suite at Pollicastro Boutique Hotel, Lecce, Italy
Okay, okay, in the Abi exam, the match would probably fail for missing the topic, but I am on my blog so free to classify the upcoming small hotel as an unusual vacation home on time. And with that, the Pollicastro Boutique Hotel gets to play along here. The unique location in the heart of the old town of Lecce in Italy has a real underground highlight. And that’s exactly where the cool twist lies. Underground, as an adjective, is always associated with the highest mark of negativity. In this case, however, it is a vacation accommodation that is underground cool with the best conscience. You can book a suite that has its own bathing paradise hidden in the basement.
You almost have to reckon with such a gem, as the hotel is housed in a 16th century palace – which did like to have one or two hidden luxuries.
Calls for a wine date: the terrace at Pollicastro Boutique Hotel.
The perfect cocktail of ancient and modern: the fancy bar.
The clear gem at Pollicastro Boutique Hotel that flashed me is part of the Grand Deluxe Nymphaeum Suite. Sounds decently epic, doesn’t it? Even the entrance gives off a palace vibe. Beneath the signature 16th-century “lunette” ceiling, which creates an enchanting play of light and shadow, is a wide, modern bed – completely on the cutting edge of today’s design language and thus fiercely contrasting with its historic base. A heart for contrasts. With its curves following the curves of the room, it provides a cozy harmony, completed by the large fireplace. Then it’s down and buckle up.
Flowing transition: From the bathroom to the spa area, it’s down to the real highlight of the Grand Deluxe Nymphaeum Suite …
… the private pool in the basement vault. If that is not magical.
Descending the stairs one floor brings you to a large bathroom – complete with its own pool with water cascade. Here, too, the mix of antique floor space with modern design and comfort creates unique vibes that immediately give me wanderlust deluxe.

Villa Pienza, Tuscany, Italy
Start permission for wanderlust: The new addition to my travel bucket list is once again from the category location to fly away. And what for friends of cultivated pleasure with privacy. Villa Pienza is a country house in Tuscany that has been renovated with sensitivity and creativity by the two host sisters – and is run with respect for the environment – and now sends flirty vibes as a cozy vacation home.
Vacation indulgence as if from a picture book: precisely because of its very private location, Villa Pienza is rightly an unusual vacation home.
Rustically elegant: The rooms are designed cozy and tidy.
Plenty of light provides sunny Tuscany vibes.
The unusual vacation home with quite a lot of space to relax stands in the middle of Val D’Orcia, has room for up to 12 guests who spend the night in authentic Tuscan flair. The challenge for the hosts was to make the house modern and comfortable, but at the same time give guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Tuscan lifestyle and be inspired by vintage objects and furnishings. From the pictures, it works really well, doesn’t it?
In addition, Villa Pienza has a large garden and a heated pool on offer, where I already uncork in my mind one regional wine date after another. If you get bored in between, you can also arrange a cooking class and cheese and wine tastings. My thirst for wanderlust is definitely there.

Tainaron Blue Retreat, Greece
One thing is certain: The tower here could easily be part of “Game of Thrones” or its new spin-off “House of the Dragon. But it’s also safe to say that this location should be the setting for my next vacation. It’s even ready for series production, because the Tainaron Blue Retreat is located in the tower on the Peloponnese peninsula. If I’m honest, it’s not a pure vacation home, of course, but it’s not a big hotel either – and you could book the whole tower together with your family.
Tainaron Blue Retreat is housed in a stone tower from the early 19th century and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the southernmost slope of the Taygetos Mountains and the sea. In transforming this three-story tower into a guesthouse, the hosts first encountered significant difficulties. They had to adapt to the specific features of Mani’s architecture while ensuring that the interiors kept pace with modern aesthetics. The structure inside and outside the tower had to remain unchanged, while all modern facilities and infrastructure had to be accommodated imperceptibly. The result is simply fierce to behold. Tainaron Blue Retreat now offers guests the quaint and unique experience of staying in a tower that dates back to the past, with its traditional narrow staircases and wooden ladders – but at the same time having everything at the start of what makes today’s vacation.
Picture bay free, the tower hotel Tainaron Blue Retreat is located on the Greek coast.
It’s in the dictionary under Pool with a view: the in-house infinity pool.
Panorama from every perspective is included at Tainaron Blue Retreat.
A nobly designed restaurant is also on board.
The pool is enchanting from every perspective.
The unusual vacation domicile has four suites and rooms and space for 11 night watchmen. You can check in to the master suite with sea view in the upper part of the tower, to the junior suite on the first floor, to the double room, which is also on the first floor, or to the double room in the adjacent building. To soak up a nice portion of the Mediterranean, you can jump into the gorgeous pool or hike to the two nearby beaches. In the in-house restaurant, you can enjoy a menu based on traditional recipes that takes you through Greece’s culinary treasures. The wine glasses are also filled seriously – “Daydrinking with a view like this” is then unbeatable anyway. And you don’t have to worry about kites disturbing the vacation mood – they are forbidden to land there.

Casa Acantilado, Salobreña, Spain
No, this is not an optical illusion, this futuristic witch’s cottage actually exists and even better: it is a vacation home that is open to guests. The house consists of only one roof, but it’s this design, which reminds me of a melting abstract face, with a living room in a binocular look, that makes this accommodation as unique as it is charming. Casa Acantilado in Salobreña – located between Malaga and Almeria on Spain’s Mediterranean coast – accommodates up to six guests in three bedrooms and three bathrooms, plus a pool with panoramic views, a garden, barbecue facilities, sea views, and yes, free Wi-Fi.
Design cinema with a view of the Mediterranean: the Casa Acantilado.
Clean white meets summery colors. The interior design and furniture makes mood.
The undulating surfaces of Casa Acantilado make for magical views.
Such architecture naturally attracts attention, and Villa Casa Acantilado is correspondingly sought-after as vacation accommodation. The price per night seems high at first with from 1200 euros, but revises itself if you make the hut full and divide by six guests. Unless you do not have to look like me on the budget, then just happy to check in as a couple. I can already see myself there crisscrossing through Spanish wines to try. The house is a design cinema for any patronage action.

Holiday village Bee Land, Slovenia
Did a bee sting me? Seriously, when I saw the first pictures of this vacation home complex in Slovenia, my wanderlust was drawn to it like bees to flowers. And the transition even makes sense. Because: In the Savinja Valley, right next to Mozirje, there is a real bee country, the so-called Beeland Skok Mozirje.
In the summer of 2017, the door was opened to all guests who want to experience a different and original way of vacation. Charming detail: the chalets have names of Maya the Bee series: Maya, Willy, Flip, Cassandra, Benjamin – all unique accommodations where guests can spend a beautiful summer or spring day by the outdoor pool. Also in the autumn and winter months you can enjoy private wellness moments with sauna and massage bath in the chalets.
Here you can nibble at the honey pot of relaxation: the honey village Bee Land – including gorgeous pool.
Blends with nature – the honeycomb look of the unusual vacation homes.
From the outside, the unusual honeycomb-style cottages make an almost mysterious impression, but everything you need is there: Modern equipped bathroom, kitchen, bedroom for a restful sleep and relaxation. An added value to the ambience is the Finnish or infrared sauna and the whirlpool or hot tub. Goes down like honey, right?

Anemos, Greece
For this candidate of unusual vacation homes we fly to the Greek Cycladic island of Kea. There I discovered a new bucket list vacation rental location for my wanderlust list. The retreat goes by the code word ANEMOS and consists of a renovated mill with a main building, two separate guest houses and a pool.
On the countless terraces you can enjoy the view – and your own cooking.
Round thing: The architecture of the old mill is still noticeable.
On each level there is a bedroom with integrated bathroom, on the first floor of the main building next to the living / dining area is the separate kitchen with direct access to the terraces and pool. A total of ten people would find space here. Due to the hillside location of the property, the two separate guest houses are located one property level lower than the mill, main house and pool. The small stone houses are about 10 meters apart, each with its own terrace and a beautiful sea view. Each guest house is equipped with a bedroom and bathroom. One of them also has a small anteroom with 2 brick sofas and a kitchenette. The view whets your appetite? One level below the guest houses and about 90 steps from the main building is a rocky plateau with access to the sea. A pebble beach waits about 500 meters away. But as painted for some cooking action and then an extensive date with Greek wine, right? Hook: the minimum stay to book is one week. But I’d happily spend more than seven days in this adventure playground for the eye.

Villa Molinella, Tenuta di Murlo, Italy
This has not happened to me for a long time. While researching for beautiful vacation homes, I somehow came across the Italian estate Tenuta di Murlo, was there already at the first website images subconsciously attracted like Frodo by the power of the ring, and when I then saw the Villa Molinella, one of several vacation villas and cottages that belong to the estate, I was directly in love with shock. And: speechless. About as speechless as Ibrahimovic’s legendary overhead kick against England, which you can watch virtually endlessly. The same goes for Villa Molinella, one of those really uniquely unusual fan houses that immediately made it to #1 on my bucket list of places to dream about that I absolutely have to visit live in person.
The Murlo estate near Perugia offers the ultimate country retreat in Umbria, owned by the same family for generations. The simple, unassuming goal: to create a unique and welcoming place where nature meets luxury and where the service is focused on your utmost comfort. The estate includes several vacation villas, with space from 20 to 4 people, plus cottages and suites. Since 2018, vines are planted in the vineyards, and soon own wines will be pressed. What a cool vision. But now back to the bucket list spot.
The property has been sensitively restored, the rustic charm elegantly transferred to modern times.
It makes you want to take a wanderlust bath right away.
Tucked away in the valley of Murlo, on one of the estate’s picturesque streams, lies Villa Molinella. I haven’t seen such a combination of rustic building with modern interior, smart details and embedding in nature for a long time. As a guest, you can bask in the morning sun, surrounded by the peaceful sound of the picturesque river right next to it – there are even natural swimming pools waiting nearby. This garden area, the river, accesses and resting areas everywhere. Wow. Keyword wow: The underground whirlpool in the old vault of this restored 13th-century mill also falls into that category.
A fireplace makes for coziness, but the glass floor is particularly curious. I wonder what is hidden in the basement?
An underground pool under the vault. Simply: wow.
You want to dream yourself directly to this spot with a glass of wine: terrace, hottub, everything on the bank of the river.
So cool can look a rest oasis in nature. Simply classy.
The restoration has maintained the original layout of the Molinella structure while reviving the ruins and restoring them to the highest standards. The mix of bright interiors and quality Italian furniture makes Molinella a truly remarkable country retreat. It’s hard to know where to relax with your rosé first. And the space? Molinella features two en-suite bedrooms, the private underground Jacuzzi, a sauna, a private outdoor pool, and an outdoor hot tub overlooking the river. That’s right: a private hottub for uber-charming wine-tasting local fruit salads overlooking the river. How can you not get dreamy?
Before that, of course, there is still the question of whether there is a catch. For this I would still have to find out the price, which was unfortunately not recognizable on the website – as soon as I have managed that, it will of course be posted here. Until then, I dream myself already times with a glass of wine to this unusual vacation home on the river.

The Island Newquay, Great Britain
The bad thing is that a Rosamunde Pilcher film has already been shot at the location. The good thing is that they won’t come back and you won’t have to worry about it. If romance comes up in this clubhouse, it’s probably one of the few places where that’s okay for a minute. At The Island, Newquay you can fulfill your dream of vacationing on a private island – rather less Maldives cuddling than James Bond villain headquarters feeling. This property is located high up on a rugged islet off the British coast of Cornwall. It feels endlessly removed from everything, yet you’re just a stone’s throw from the mainland in Newquay Bay.
Rocking ship: The relaxed interior is decorated in maritime tones.
What a view. It’s clear that you should plan a safe week of vacation.
The restoration of the house took eight months, now beach feeling in airy heights awaits you there. At high tide, the island is surrounded by water and completely cut off from the mainland. The only way up is via the steep steps cut into the rock face and the suspension bridge. Unusual vacation homes come with unusual accesses. Breathless, free from giddiness. Sorry. Back to good taste. For this, there is a specially made large BBQ outdoor grill in the garden, and inside you will find a bar room. If you have any special wishes regarding refrigerator and bar filling, you can let us know before you arrive. And just in case, wifi is also on board up there.

The Lightship, Amsterdam
A vacation on a houseboat still sounds too dry to you? Then take a look at Amsterdam. Because the bright red Lightship, which is located just a few minutes from the historic city center, has really well-designed inner values on board. The design and transformation from a working ship into a family home was a transformation that took owners Vivian and Jeff 11 years to complete. And to celebrate, they thought: Let’s have guests come in for a look. Now you can treat yourself to a bed & breakfast experience in the seventy-year-old British lighthouse and fireboat.
Exit? It is difficult to leave this unusual vacation home (boat).
Looks like design office, but is inside the ship. Cool contrast.
The two suites, engine room and upper deck were designed by an award-winning architect. Each suite has a comfortable king size bed, a private bathroom and a minibar for free use.
B&B guests have their own entrance and a huge sunny terrace on the front deck of the boat, with great views over the industrial city and the lighthouse. Check out the pictures of the interiors – could have been straight outta design hotel. Who’s coming on board?

FourElements Living by Berger (Austria)
Wow. Just: wow. I already fell in love with FourElements – living by Berger last year. And I think: A chalet now simply counts as a vacation home. The unconventional location with several chalets with a natural open-air cinema has been at the top of my bucket list ever since. Why? Because just by looking at the photos, you can see exactly how the vacation would go. Best buddy or best friend, fireplace on, whiskey, wine, and patronage on. The trip to Styria is this thoughtful design chalet unique high above a mountain river gorge is made for it.
FourElements – living by Berger consists of 3 fancy chalets under the motto fire, water and air. How cool must that be, wine tasting in the evening by the fireplace with a view of the Salza (private beach is at the start, for all those who do not know the cold when bathing), in the morning to wake up better go rafting on the river …
… and then into the hot tub and say hello to the Jacuzzi? A powerful indulgence. Everything around is green, the river rushes below – stress has a break there.
Unusual vacation homes can sometimes look like a design showroom. In the Four Elements, however, it looks really cozy.
On almost 100 square meters in Chalet Luft are distributed, for example, bedroom, living room, dining room with fireplace, kitchen and bathroom. On a window sofa you have an outstanding view of the water. Who needs a TV? One floor below is the spa with sauna and pool. And a fireplace, if you want to get a little cozy at night. It’s allowed, isn’t it?

Panorama Glass Lodge, Iceland
Quick prize question: Where would it be emphatically impressive to put a hot tub? For example, in a place where you have a good chance of bathing under the aurora borealis. Such a Jacuzzi would be, wouldn’t it? That’s why I instantly fell in love with the Panorama Glass Lodge on Iceland. And the island is at the top of my “must-visit-again-longer” list anyway.
The special: The thoroughly designed hut has a glazed panoramic area – safe that there is also the bed. Directly under the stars. So if you check in there, you shouldn’t be too wary of romance. While watching the sun, clouds, stars and sky at play, you can relax and inhale a wine and enjoy the Natura us of the Front Row.
Cool design, even cooler furniture and an ice-cold impressive view: I want to go there.
Front row at the outdoor movie theater: Unusual vacation homes like Panorama Glass Lodge make traveling fun after all.
The lodge is located only 30 minutes from Reykjavik, in Hvalfjörður, a remote place by the sea. So you should be able to handle a portion of seclusion – but then you can immerse yourself undisturbed in the many facets of Iceland. In a small, fully equipped kitchen you will find two electric stoves, a refrigerator and a toaster, a spacious dining table and a luxurious rain shower. Can you stand it, right?
And then there’s the small, wooden whirlpool in front of the door. A place that should quickly become addictive. No matter what the weather is like around it. Also clear: Iceland is not the cheapest island, you have to leave out the one or other times eating out at home and save for it, but for that you also get priceless experiences.

The Windmill Suffolk
I’ll admit: You really have to use a lot of imagination to come up with the idea of such an individual vacation home when looking at the 125-year-old original building. But the owners and the Beech Architects team had plenty of imagination (fortunately), and transformed the 18-meter-high windmill into a design accommodation princess in all the best Disney romanticism.
The Windmill Suffolk now has 2 bedrooms, kitchen, a bathroom and a panoramic pod for special views at the top. And future princes don’t have to climb up hair either, just walk into The Windmill Suffolk to the big front door. That’s something you really deserve on your vacation.
Welcome to the mill spaceship!
There is always something new to discover as you tour The Windmill Suffolk.
Everything is round in the bathroom, too. Whether you want to get out of the tub so quickly?
Executive chair. Absolutely favorite place with the view.
The design mill can accommodate a maximum of 4 adults, and for those who only want to stay as a couple, the hosts offer discounted rates. And now the budget question: How much do you have to plan for a stay at The Windmill Suffolk? Overnight stays are currently available for 200 euros, more info and all available dates at thewindmillsuffolk.com
